Part 7 of 20 in How to Hire A Players: A Guide for Indian Founders← Part 6Part 8 →
This chapter introduces the Four-Pillar Framework, a method for hiring top talent effectively. It guides Indian founders on how to systematically identify and secure A Players for their teams.
- Gut feeling is not an effective hiring strategy.
- The A Method consists of four sequential pillars: Scorecard, Source, Select, and Sell.
- Scorecard defines success in the role with mission, outcomes, and competencies.
- Source involves generating A Players through referrals and targeted searches.
- Sell involves a planned conversation about Fit, Family, Freedom, Fortune, and Fun.
Gut feeling is not a strategy. It is a mood. Moods are how you choose a restaurant. They are not how you choose the person who will run collections for your SME book.
The A Method has four pillars. They are sequential. Skipping one is how the method becomes a slogan.
Pillar 1. Scorecard
A one-page definition of success in the role. Mission. Outcomes. Competencies. Not a job description copied from another firm. Not a list of tools. A picture of A performance so clear that two interviewers can score the same candidate without a committee argument.
Pillar 2. Source
A systematic way to generate A Players before you are desperate. Referrals first. Then targeted search. Job posts last. If your only channel is inbound from Naukri and Instahyre, you are fishing in the well-lit pond where B Players already know how to look employable.
Pillar 3. Select
A sequence of structured interviews that collect facts about the past, not theories about the future. A short screen. A long chronological Who interview. Focused interviews against the scorecard. Reference calls you run yourself. Then, and only then, a rating against the scorecard.
Pillar 4. Sell
A Players have options. In India those options include a parent’s voice, a spouse’s city preference, a notice period, and the social prestige of a large brand. Selling is not begging. It is a planned conversation about Fit, Family, Freedom, Fortune, and Fun, continued until the person has actually joined and survived the first hundred days.
The next four chapters treat each pillar as a working manual. Read them with a specific open role in mind. If you do not have one, invent the next hire you know you will need in ninety days. The method is learned by using it, not by admiring it.
