Part 12 of 20 in How to Sell: The Key to Success← Part 11Part 13 →
This chapter discusses how founders can effectively use AI tools to enhance their sales process without replacing essential human interactions. It is part of the 'How to Sell: The Key to Success' series, aimed at helping founders improve their sales strategies.
- AI tools can speed up sales preparation but cannot replace the need for personal interaction.
- Prepare a brief before calls using AI to gather relevant information and ask better questions.
- During calls, use AI tools to record conversations with consent for better focus and accuracy.
- After calls, use AI to analyze notes and identify patterns, but review insights personally.
- Practice sales scenarios with AI to build confidence and improve handling of objections.
Bettger carried a card in his pocket and a record of his calls. You can carry a better record. You cannot carry a better excuse. AI will make a prepared founder faster. It will make an avoidant founder more fluent at avoiding. Use it on the work around the conversation. Keep the conversation.
Before the call: ten minutes of context
You do not need a research department to avoid walking in cold. A short brief is enough, and a model will draft it if you ask for facts and forbid flattery.
- What the company does, in one paragraph, from its own site.
- Who you are meeting, and who they seem to report to.
- A likely Tuesday pain, marked as a hypothesis, not a fact.
- One intelligent question you could not have asked from the logo alone.
Perplexity, Claude, and ChatGPT all do this adequately. For Indian companies, add the obvious public checks yourself: the website, the app store reviews if they have consumers, recent news, and the person’s own posts. Do not recite the brief at them. Use it to ask a better first question. A founder who opens with “I saw you expanded the Nashik warehouse” has already separated themselves from the ten vendors who opened with a calendar link.
During the call: capture, with consent
On a Google Meet or Zoom, a recorder such as Fathom, Fireflies, Grain, or tl;dv will give you a transcript so you can listen instead of scribbling. Tell them. “I am recording so I do not miss what you said. Is that all right?” Hidden recording is a trust error, and in India it is a legal mess you do not need. On a phone or WhatsApp call, do not pretend a bot is in the room. Take four lines. The tool is not the point. The words are.
After the call: turn the hour into a record
Paste the notes into a standing prompt and demand their language. A reliable instruction is simple. Extract the pain in their words, the workaround, the decision maker, the key issue, the objection, the next step I asked for, and anything I should not build. Flag anything I seem to have assumed. Do not invent quotes.
Keep the output in the Customer Truth document, next to the raw note. Once a week, ask a model to cluster the last ten entries: repeated pains, repeated stalls, words that keep appearing. This is Bettger’s record, done in an evening instead of a Sunday with a pencil. Read the cluster yourself. Do not let the model name your strategy. It has not sat in the room.
Practice the hard room before you enter it
The highest-leverage use of AI for a fearful founder is rehearsal. Fifteen minutes. You play yourself. The model plays a sceptical SME owner, a CA who hates new logins, a parent who wants the job offer accepted, an angel who has been burnt. Tell it to interrupt, to give the polite objection first, and not to fold just because you pitched well. Then ask it where you talked too much. This is enthusiasm practice and fear practice in the same chair. It is not a substitute for the real no. It makes the real no less likely to scatter you.
The follow-up, drafted and then rewritten
After a good call, have a model draft the note from your four lines: what they said, what you proposed, the date you asked for. Then delete the warmth that was not earned and send it yourself. WhatsApp is where many Indian deals actually move. A short voice note in your voice, referring to their sentence, will beat a polished email. AI can structure it. It should not speak it.
Zoho CRM is the practical system if you want Indian invoicing and a rupee-friendly stack. HubSpot’s free tier is enough if the motion is simple. A spreadsheet is enough until you have more conversations than you can see on one screen. The failure mode is the same in all three: fields filled, lessons empty. If the CRM cannot show the key issue of each live deal, it is a filing cabinet.
What not to automate
- The first message to a warm introduction. A forwarded AI paragraph is how you waste the intro.
- The price. A model does not know what your last five buyers flinched at, unless you tell it, and even then the flinch is yours to read.
- The claim. Never let a draft invent a customer result. One false witness will undo Chapter 6.
- The presence. Until the six-question brief in Chapter 8 is full, you are the salesperson. Tools around you. Not instead of you.
AI is the card in Bettger’s pocket, updated. It is not the person across the table.
Practice. Build one page you will reuse: a pre-call brief prompt, a post-call extract prompt, and a sceptical-buyer rehearsal. Use all three on the next real conversation. Keep what the buyer said. Discard what the model smoothed.
