A guided path through Startup Mentors for a first-time Indian founder. Work through the stages in order, or jump straight to the one you are stuck on. Everything here is free.
How to use this roadmap: read the stage you are in, follow the two or three links that apply, and do the work before you move on. The links are our clearest thinking on each decision, not everything we have written. If a stage feels too basic, skip it. If it feels hard, that is usually the stage you are actually in.
Stage 1: Decide what to build
Most startups die before the first line of code, in the wrong idea. Start by understanding why an idea that worked elsewhere may not work in India, then shrink it until it is useful.
- Why copy-pasting Western business models fails in India
- Scratch your own itch, and build the smallest useful version
- When a working idea still gets rejected by the market
Stage 2: Understand the Indian customer
India is not one market. Price sensitivity, trust, language and city tier change what people buy and how they pay. A founder who skips this step builds for a customer who does not exist.
- Vernacular marketing: reaching the 90% English ads miss
- Cultural myopia: why founders misread regional India
- Why consumer trust is a startup stumbling block in India
- Rural India is not as online as founders think
- The urban market is smaller than founders assume
Stage 3: Build a product that fits
Define who you are building for, then make the product fit that person rather than a generic average.
Stage 4: Get your first customers
Do the first sales yourself. The selling series is a short, practical course on it.
- The sales skill nobody taught you
- The power of enthusiasm
- The quickest way to win confidence
- Do the first sales yourself
Stage 5: Keep the money straight
Runway is the first number every founder should know, and the one most avoid. Work it out before you decide to raise.
- Free runway calculator
- Why Indian startups mismanage cash flow forecasts
- The hidden dangers of raising from family and friends
- The realities of fundraising in India
- What Carta’s 2025 data means for founders
Stage 6: Hire well
Hiring is the founder’s real job in the early years. Treat it with the same rigour as product.
- How to Hire A Players: a 20-part guide for Indian founders
- Chapter 1: Hiring is the founder’s real job
Stage 7: Learn from founders who did it
The fastest way to learn is from companies that already played the game in India, wins and losses both.

- Infra.Market: a B2B giant built quietly
- Styl AI: a data-first playbook
